ESC was commissioned by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) in 2023 to perform a Carbon Emissions and Waste Study for the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions (MICE) industry.
About the Project
Singapore’s reputation as a global hub for MICE events continues to grow, setting new standards for sustainability and innovation. Leading this initiative is the STB, engaging ESC to conduct a transformative study to address carbon emissions and waste management in Singapore’s MICE industry.
This initiative was part of Singapore’s broader effort to track waste and carbon emissions by 2023, to reduce waste in line with the Singapore Green Plan by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. ESC played a significant role in supporting STB’s efforts to understand and reduce emissions in the MICE industry.
Our Approach
ESC calculated Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions arising from energy, water, and waste for six purpose-built MICE venues in Singapore:
- Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Centre
- Singapore Expo
- Raffles City Convention Centre
- Suntec Singapore Expo & Convention Centre
- Resorts World Convention Centre
- Changi Exhibition Centre
ESC assessed the overall environmental impact of the six MICE venues and benchmarked performance against international best practices. MICE venues can continue to use the baseline to track and monitor yearly carbon emissions and waste generation. These frameworks were developed following international standards and serve as a blueprint for metric data collection across the industry.
Outcome
ESC’s work provided a benchmark for future emissions comparisons. The insights from ESC’s study will empower STB and the industry to monitor carbon emissions, and further implement waste reduction measures and decarbonisation strategies to drive positive environmental outcomes.
By providing a benchmark for carbon emissions and waste generation, MICE venues can now identify areas for improvement and implement measures to reduce their environmental footprint. This not only aligns with global sustainability goals but also enhances Singapore’s reputation as a responsible and eco-friendly choice for MICE events.
