About the Project
ESC secured another contract from Press Metal, a public-listed Malaysia-based, globally recognized aluminium producer. It expanded the scope of the comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) we were conducting for Press Metal’s aluminum production facility, and for whom we had created an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). On the new project, we conducted an LCA for Press Metal’s alumina production facility in Bintan, Indonesia.
The goal of the project was to evaluate the environmental impact of the emissions associated with their alumina production and supporting processes. It was part of Press Metal’s ongoing effort to minimize their carbon footprint to global standards, one of many initiatives to reduce emissions during production processes.
A leading sustainability consultant in the ASEAN region with extensive global experience, ESC is the first choice of companies seeking LCAs that comply with the international standards ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. Our smart, practical, and cost-effective solutions are accessible to large multinationals and mid-sized enterprises alike.
Our Approach
An LCA assesses the environmental impacts associated with all stages of the life cycle of a product or process. It is a very specific and highly technical analysis involving countless factors and utilizing specialized software and tools. Our professionals are well-versed and have deep experience in the norms and standards defining an LCA.
ESC assessed the emissions associated with the Alumina production facility by looking at the Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 GHG emissions associated with the production line. This involved assessing the emissions arising from the electricity consumption, raw materials, raw material processing, transport, and waste generation from the facility. The outcomes of this project were summarized in an LCA background report which communicated the overall environmental impacts of the product throughout the product lifecycle.
Conducting an LCA helps, Press Metal know their emissions hotspots within the supply chain. With this understanding, they can set realistic targets to reduce carbon emissions in the long run. In fact, investing in an LCA makes Press Metal a pioneer in the region for this kind of sustainability initiative.
It’s also worth noting that the LCA can further be used to create the EPD document, which transparently communicates emissions associated with the products. It is available publicly for external stakeholders to search online on the EPD portal, and may lead to Press Metal’s customers selecting the company’s products over its competitors’.
Outcome
ESC provided Press Metal with information on the far-reaching environmental impact of their alumina production. The conclusions of the life cycle assessment allowed the company to communicate the environmental performance of their alumina production transparently, enhancing their credibility and reputation before investors, regulators and consumers.
It is expected that the LCA will support the company’s corporate responsibility strategy, enable the company to meet customers’ demand for sustainability, and embed environmental responsibility in the entire business.
Given the importance of good data quality and accurate, compliant impact analysis, companies engage reputed sustainability consultants to conduct LCAs and initiate strategic measures to reduce their carbon footprint.
