ESC supported Ormat Geothermal Indonesia in advancing its planned 20 MW Wapsalit Geothermal Power Plant by delivering the environmental and social studies required to meet national regulations and international financing standards. Our work helps position the project for responsible development and long-term operational success.
About the Project
The Wapsalit development on Buru Island will generate 20 MW of clean, reliable geothermal power for Indonesia’s growing energy market. To support a smooth approval and financing process, ESC carried out a full Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and then prepared a practical Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP). These studies outline how the project can manage impacts, protect biodiversity, engage communities effectively, and maintain strong health and safety performance throughout its lifecycle.
Our Approach
ESC delivered decision-ready assessments backed by deep sector expertise. Our approach combined international ESG standards, local regulatory insight, and proven experience across Asia-Pacific renewable energy projects. We provided Ormat with:
- A comprehensive ESIA identifying key environmental and social risks that could influence approvals, timelines, or lender decisions.
- A clear and actionable ESMP aligned with national requirements and international lender expectations—supporting predictable implementation during construction and operation.
- Integrated safeguards covering biodiversity, community relations, health, safety, and security to ensure the project’s long-term resilience.
- Local and international expertise that bridged global best practice with Indonesia’s regulatory context, reducing uncertainty for both developers and financiers.
- A strong energy-sector track record, giving Ormat confidence in ESC’s ability to navigate complex renewable projects and deliver solutions that support responsible, bankable outcomes.
Outcome
ESC’s work provided Ormat with a clear and credible foundation to advance the Wapsalit project responsibly and with financing confidence. By aligning the ESIA and ESMP with international lender expectations and Indonesian regulatory requirements, we helped strengthen the project’s bankability, reduce approval risks, and support a smoother due-diligence process.
Our approach also reinforced the project’s long-term licence to operate by improving community engagement, supporting positive biodiversity outcomes, and embedding strong health and safety practices. Together, these measures position the 20 MW geothermal development to contribute reliably to Indonesia’s low-carbon energy goals while maintaining strong social and environmental performance.
