PMG Asia, a prominent company offering integrated marketing solutions in Asia Pacific, partnered with ESC in May 2022 to develop an Environmental Impact and Savings Calculator that gives their clients the ability to measure the carbon footprint of different products.
About the Project
Operating in 14 APAC countries, PMG was seeking to develop an internal software solution in response to the ever-increasing requests from its customers for eco-friendly products. They wanted to offer more sustainable products to their clients, and thus needed a tool that could allow their sales and purchasing teams to achieve this goal.
The Environmental Impact and Savings Calculator offers PMG a platform for their customers, who are top brands sold in chain stores across multiple countries, to easily measure the water, trees, and fossil fuels used in making their point-of-sale material (POSM) products. Recognizing the urgency to meet these demands, PMG tasked ESC with designing and developing the inputs for the tool to fulfil this mission.
Our Approach
Leveraging our expertise in sustainability and climate change, we initiated the process with comprehensive workshops involving the client’s management team. These workshops helped us understand the sustainability objectives and metrics required for the calculator’s development. This ensured that the tool would be aligned with their goals and effectively measure product carbon footprints.
We then combined information from PMG’s supply chains with publicly accessible Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data to assess the environmental impact of over 100 POSM materials including wood, paper, plastic, and fabric.
After assessing these materials, we conducted a thorough software analysis to guide PMG during the development stage. This involved evaluating various software options that could complement and enhance the functionality of the calculator. These recommendations provided PMG with direction on how to smoothly implement the Environmental Impact and Savings Calculator and integrate its datasets into their systems.
Outcome
The expert and diligent analysis by ESC into the input metrics contained within the tool, allowed PMG to classify the carbon footprint and resource use of its product. Therefore, allowing PMG to reassure their clients that their products are designed with the utmost regard for environmental impact.
Additionally, ESC’s review of available software packages enabled PMG to envision a clear path forward for the tool’s development. It not only ensured the feasibility of integrating it into their internal systems but will also give PMG’s customers more value in the knowledge that their products have a low carbon footprint.
