ESC bridges the gap to improve waste management in Vietnam

Vũng Tàu, Vietnam: We are pleased to announce that the Cities Development Initiative for Asia (CDIA), a multi-donor trust fund managed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), has awarded ESC the Preparation of the Feasibility Study for the Vung Tau Solid Waste Management project.

The objective is to prepare a holistic solid waste management (SWM) investment program that covers the full aspects of SWM in the city, including feasibility level, priority plastic waste project components to be taken up by the Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW) for downstream financing. This project will help promote designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use and regenerating natural systems.

ESC has formed a dedicated team of international and in-country solid waste management specialists with extensive regional experience in evaluating solid waste systems, identifying risks, weaknesses, and opportunities, and preparing appropriate solutions to the environmental, social, institutional, financial, and regulatory conditions on the ground.

Vietnam’s transition to a ‘socialist-oriented market economy’ has resulted in one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies. With a vision to 2045, Vietnam has adopted a socio-economic development strategy and National Action Plans for a circular economy. To achieve its goal, Vietnam has pledged to design and manufacture products that last longer, reduce waste and emissions, and restore the ecological system.

The move towards a circular economy will provide tools to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss while addressing important social needs. It will promote prosperity, jobs, and resilience while cutting greenhouse gas emissions, waste, and pollution.

Solid Waste Cycle Holistic View

CDIA Solid Waste Management Viet Nam

In response to the solid and plastic waste challenges faced by Viet Nam, the AEPW has partnered with the Siam Cement Group (SCG) and Innovation Norway to address plastic waste pollution in Vietnamese cities by supporting and financing plastic waste management projects that contribute to the removal of plastics in the solid waste value chain and the reduction of plastic waste that ends up in landfill or the environment and oceans. Part of the project will focus on the preparation of a grant application for AEPW follow-on funding.

By forming and strengthening links between all project stakeholders; local government, community, and private sector, ESC will be assisting CDIA with the project planning and preparation of solid waste management strategies including waste collection and transport, public awareness and engagement, improving policy on municipal solid waste management, initiating Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), and phase out / banning of single-use products.

Through ESC’s regional experience in advanced solid waste management systems and circular economy, we bring real-world workable, purpose fit and integrated solutions that will serve as a model for future waste projects in Vietnam and across the region.
