The client, a global leader in modern construction equipment and tools, with operations spanning over 90 countries, partnered with ESC to conduct an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) of gypsum plasterboard. This project involved a detailed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for the client’s production facility in Songkhla, Thailand.
About the Project
With buildings accounting for over 40% of global energy consumption and one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, manufacturers and suppliers of industrial materials face increasing pressure from customers such as housing development boards and developers to disclose the environmental impact of their products. The Environmental Product Declaration of gypsum plasterboard provides this vital information, enabling informed decision-making in the construction sector.
The production facility of the client manufactures various gypsum plasterboard products. The goal was to assess the environmental impacts associated with their production.
Our Approach
ESC’s commitment to environmental sustainability is evident in its cradle-to-grave and module D approach, which involves a comprehensive assessment of the environmental impact of plasterboard products at every stage of their life cycle. This includes meticulous consideration of various factors such as raw material extraction, manufacturing, transportation, product use, and disposal or recycling, ensuring a holistic evaluation.
ESC’s sustainability consultants collected extensive data on energy consumption, raw material extraction, transportation, and waste generation. This data was verified by third-party entities, enhancing the credibility and accuracy of the study.
The Environmental Product Declaration study conducted by ESC provides transparent and verified information about the environmental impact of the product, enabling consumers and stakeholders to make informed decisions based on reliable data. ESC ensured compliance with ISO 14040/44 and EN 15804+A2 standards, guaranteeing the assessment was conducted using internationally recognised methodologies.
Outcome
ESC supported the client in obtaining an EPD to demonstrate the environmental performance of their products. This transparency helps meet increasing market demands for sustainability and reinforces the client’s commitment to reducing their environmental footprint.
Moreover, the Life Cycle Assessment and Environmental Product Declaration of Gypsum identified emission hotspots within the client’s operations. By addressing these areas, the client can now focus on reducing their overall environmental impact, aligning their products with the growing demand for sustainable materials. This study empowers the client to maintain competitiveness in a market that values eco-friendly solutions.
